K/J DANCE BATTLES

Overview

Competition Overview
K/J Dance Battles is a Kawacon-exclusive, all-ages K-Pop and J-Pop dance competition created by dancers for dancers. Started by Amaret Arts and Entertainment in 2022, this competition challenges artists’ technical dance ability, artistic vision, and storytelling capabilities in a friendly and competitive environment to find and crown the best of the best.

Standing out from other conventions’ dance competitions, K/J Dance Battles has a theme that contestants fit with their performances! This year’s theme is “4 Honor: Legends Foretold”. See the “Theme” section below for more info!

Coming back with major improvements from last year’s competition, K/J Dance Battles is introducing its new format and structure. This year it’s only ONE competition, so dancers can forget about competing in multiple rounds. Everyone will have only one opportunity to leave their hearts on the stage. Additionally, contestants will compete in one of the following categories: Novice, Intermediate, or Advanced, so that dancers of the same level are competing against each other. And finally, soloists/duos will NO LONGER be competing against groups to ensure an equal playing field for all dancers.

This new structure will equal more contestants and more opportunities to win at K/J Dance Battles 2025! Do you think you or your team has what it takes to win? With prizes and more at
stake, why wait to apply? Apply with your audition video today, and maybe we’ll see you battling for YOUR honor at next year’s K/J Dance Battles!

Theme

Competition Theme
The theme of K/J Dance Battles this year is “4 Honor: Legends Foretold”. Influenced by the themes of ancient Asia and the myths, urban legends, and folktales that came from it, dancers are expected to draw inspiration from these themes to create a performance that pulls the audience back in time to accompany the dancers throughout Asian history. Above all, the goal is to have performers honor Asian cultures and history and show that respect through their performances.

Examples of how to fit the theme in your competition performance are below:

  • Taking inspiration from or re-telling the story of an Asian urban legend, folktale, or myth.

  • Re-telling a scene or plot from an anime, movie, show, book, or other form of media influenced by Asian history.

  • Using songs that have traditional/classical Asian influence, whether that be through its instruments or overall sound

The theme is NOT to encourage cultural appropriation, and contestants who seem to disrespect Asian cultures or history will be disqualified. Cultural appropriation is the unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of the customs, practices, ideas, etc. of one person or society by members of another and typically more dominant people or society. If you have any questions regarding how you will incorporate Asian history into your performance, reach out to Amaret at dance@kawaconsa.com.
